Internet Safety and the Students We Teach
The list of potential risks concerning use of the Internet grows each day. Among the many dangers to our students are sexually explicit content, hate group or racist sites and promos re: drugs, alcohol, tobacco, graphic violence, etc. Identity theft and cyber bullying are social risks associated with the Internet. Computers and computer networks are often targets of malicious computer viruses and spyware that travel the "super highway." Children are naturally "facilitators of victimization" as well. Young people often lack emotional maturity and are more susceptible to manipulation or intimidation via the Internet. Many children find attention, validation and affection by spending time with others on the Internet. Children naturally lack caution and self-preservation thinking they are indispensable, especially in the virtual world of the Internet. Children that are naturally curious about sex and other "forbidden" topics are taught to obey adult commands. At the same time, they are often hesitant to tell a trusted adult about instances that may be embarrassing for fear they will be labeled a tattletale.

Social Influencing
Social influencing via the Internet is a major concern. Websites such as facebook, youtube, twitter, etc. as well as personal blogging and podcast sites are common ground for our students. “Real Life" videos from NetSmartz provides a glance into some of these social influencing sites.
